History of the Circuit Breaker, by Civic Recycling

We began Part 1 with the inception of the circuit breaker, in Thomas Edison’s shop in the 1870s. The Boston Electric Company was the first to manufacture and install a circuit breaker, about 20 years later in 1898. But these early breakers wouldn’t be familiar to you – or to your parents, or even your grandparents.

The First Miniature Circuit Breaker

The miniature circuit breaker you would recognize was born in 1924. A Swiss company called Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC) patented the design, which was based on an earlier patent by Hugo Stotz. Stotz was an engineer who had founded an electrical society in Mannheim, Germany in 1891. He sold his company and patents to BBC, and they developed and patented the miniature circuit breaker in Germany. Stotz is credited as the inventor, and thus the grandfather of the modern, thermal-magnetic breakers in every home, office, and industrial property today.

Meanwhile, BBC stayed in business under the same name for over 60 years. In 1988, it merged with the General Swedish Electrical Limited Company (ASEA), and became ASEA Brown & Boveri (ABB). ABB still manufactures Stotz circuit breakers, and in 2014 they celebrated the 90-year anniversary of the original patent.

Top 5 Electrical Safety Tips for Homeowners & Landlords

Electrical issues need to be addressed. Not only can homeowners receive quite a shock from overloaded circuits or worn-out insulation (no pun intended), but an electrical problem, such as an outdated breaker, can lead to a fire. Homeowners need to be aware of how to keep their home safe from electrical problems and keep an eye out for a range of electrical hazards. It is also important to realize when to call for professional help.

Homeowners and landlords can address a number of these issues and avoid dealing with a potential fire hazard in their home. Protect yourself and your family with the following electrical five safety tips.


1. A Stubborn Breaker Should Not Be Forced

You reset the breaker. It then immediately trips. Do not attempt to reset it again. This problem could be due to one of two reasons. On one hand, the electrical load on that breaker could be too large. On the other hand, tripping could be a result of a severe electrical problem. Force that breaker again and you may be dealing with a fire in your home. Tripping of breakers is meant to protect the homeowner. Call an electrician to investigate the problem.

2. A Warm Outlet Could Be A Sign Of An Overloaded Outlet

Do not ignore a warm outlet. This does not always apply to dimmer switches, which are often warm and generally not a hazard. But as a general rule, never ignore a warm outlet. There can be a few reasons for a warm outlet. As a homeowner, you may be dealing with a loose electrical splice, undersized wiring or a large electrical load on a single outlet. Cut the power before checking into the issue. Keep an eye out for melted connections, burned insulation or a loose splice. In addition, evaluate the wattage of connected devices. It may be necessary to switch the device to another outlet.

An electrician may be needed if the issue continues after a basic assessment is made – electrical issues can be tricky, so don’t hesitate to call on a professional in cases where you may feel unsafe.

Better safe than sorry!

3. An Outdated Breaker May Cause a Fire

Outdated panels and breakers can overheat wires and lead to a house fire. Homeowners need to replace old, outdated panels and circuit breakers such as older FPE panels, Zinsco Panels, split-bus panels past their expected lifespan and modified fuse boxes. Modifications on fuse boxes can lead to blown fuses and compensatory changes like larger fuses can create a fire hazard.

A homeowner with an outdated panel and breaker should have it professionally inspected and in the most instances, replaced.

4. A Wobbly Outlet or Switch Receptacle May Have Come Loose

When outlets or switches are loose, this is generally an indication that the box is not properly affixed to the stud, or it could mean the device was improperly mounted. Cut the power, remove the faceplate and check mounting screws. You may need to tighten the mounting screw, shorten long screws to have them fully set, or tighten the box’s connection to the framing. This should address the issue.

Again, f you are unsure contact an electrician to inspect the outlet. Safety first!

5. Do Not Use Water to Put Out an Electrical Fire

All residents in the house should know how to put out an electrical fire. Water should not be used to address an electrical fire as the water will only help it get larger. A chemical fire extinguisher can be used on small electrical fires. If a fire has grown too large, exit the home and call the fire department once safely outside.

How Breaker Testing Can Give You Instant Peace Of Mind

When you’re purchasing reconditioned circuit breakers, whether it be for personal or business purposes, it’s important to know that they’re going to work exactly as advertised. At Civic Recycling, it’s not something we merely take for granted; it’s something that we take pride in and have the utmost confidence in. What’s more, every reconditioned circuit breaker comes with a written test report, to offer peace of mind. We’ll discuss this in greater depth in the subsequent text. Now, we understand that simply saying these things won’t convince you that our products are any better than anyone else’s, which works just fine as we have ample evidence to show you.

Reconditioned and Tested Circuit Breakers

At Civic, we put each and every reconditioned circuit breaker through a rigorous testing process that includes multiple stages. The first stages are a complete cleaning of the inside and outside, followed by a 36-point visual inspection of the interior and exterior of the breaker. Once things have been properly visually inspected and cleaned comes the actual breaker testing. Molded circuit breakers consist are three main parts: the insulation, the contacts, and the trip unit. Three different tests are required to test the three different components, which are outlined as follows:

  • #1 – Insulation Resistance:

This test is done to verify the condition of the breaker’s insulating materials. Testing is performed using an insulation resistance test set at 1KV. The results of this test are included in the test report we spoke about.

  • #2 – Contact Resistance:

The second test performed is done to verify the current path in the breaker. Loose or bad connections, dirty hinge points or contacts, and burnt contacts will all show up as a high resistance reading. Testing is performed on each phase individually using a digital low resistance ohmmeter at 10amps, results are measured in milliohms and recorded, again, in the test report.

  • #3 – Over Current Trip Test:

The third test is to verify the time-current characteristics of the breaker. Testing is performed with direct injection to simulate an overload current. We have assembled over 2000 manufacturer’s trip curves, and test each phase on every molded case circuit breaker to ensure that it trips according to the manufacturer’s very own factory specifications. These results too will end up in the test report.

 


Civic Recycling Test Reports

If you’re not well-versed in this type of language, what we’re saying is that each and every circuit breaker we recondition and sell goes through a battery of tests to ensure it will perform at the highest levels possible. Each reconditioned breaker also has a test report attached to it. What this report includes the detailed results of each breaker. It’s something of an insurance policy when purchasing breakers, as you know that the breaker has been put through the necessary paces to perform the way it should. The test report has a unique tracking number attached to it so that it’s always there to reference for you.

As a further insurance policy on each breaker, testing is performed only by Certified Low Voltage Circuit Breaker Technicians. Not only that, but each reconditioned breaker will meet or exceed the standards set out by NEMA, NETA, IEEE, as well as the manufacturer’s own testing standards. How’s that for awesome safety!

Just about every business uses electricity. In fact, the use of electrical power is so commonplace that it’s easy to take for granted in some respects. Any electrical system has the potential to cause harm to both life and property and accidents do occur. These mishaps happen every day, whether here in Canada or elsewhere, and often it is because proper procedures in the treatment and use of electricity aren’t followed.

Personal injuries may be suffered in a variety of ways, including:

  • Direct contact with either an energized electrical conductor or a live circuit. The human body is an efficient electrical conductor and when an electrical charge enters the body the energy will travel through it seeking a ground. This can be fatal, as the electricity can cause a malfunction of the heart, the lungs, and other muscles.
  • Electrical energy can arc or jump from an exposed circuit or conductor through the air to a person who is grounded, causing similar death or damage as that of direct contact.
  • Thermal burns may be suffered from the heat generated by electrical arcs as well as burns received from materials catching on fire as a result of contact with arcs or the heat created by electrical currents. Contact burns caused by being shocked may show little damage to your skin yet create significant damage to internal tissue.
  • Receiving a shock while on a ladder or otherwise working above ground can cause a fall that may result in serious injury.

Your Electrical Safety System

Every business should have an electrical safety management system in place that provides basic training regarding ways to avoid being injured or killed by electricity and ways to prevent property damage or destruction.

Here are some tips on building a better electrical safety management system for all:

  1. Conduct semi-annual safety meetings for all employees stressing the dangers of electricity and how to protect against property damage/personal injury.

  2. Ensure personnel know what to do in an electrical emergency.

  3. Ensure all extension cords are of the proper size for the appliance they’re used to power, that they’re only used for temporary use, not coiled in use and inspected before use.

  4. Ensure all circuit breaker panels are properly labeled and any breakers that are replaced are certified safely operational.

  5. Conduct regular workplace assessments to ensure safe practices are being utilized throughout.

  6. When it’s time to replace a piece of electrical gear, utilize the services of a certified professional for replacement parts.

Top 8 Myths about Reconditioned Electrical Equipment

Ever heard something about electrical equipment you weren’t too sure about? What about reconditioned electrical equipment? Depending on what you heard it may be flat out wrong. Knowing the facts about reconditioned equipment is important. According to PEARL knowing the difference can “save you big bucks while helping your company meet environmental goals”.

Pearl has a fantastic article showcasing the top myths about reconditioned equipment. We will be showcasing and summarizing each point in our “Top 8 myths” post. Know the difference between fact and fiction from Civic Recycling and PEARL!


The myths are as follows:

Myth #1 – Reconditioned electrical equipment could be counterfeit

Reconditioned doe not equal counterfeit. Reconditioned models may not be supported by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) but that does not mean they can be lumped under the same categories as surplus and counterfeit. As always all equipment is tested to high standards. Civic Recycling would know right away if anything was out of place.

Reconditioned equipment is obviously not new and in the case of counterfeit equipment, it almost always is. Counterfeit models will likely be in new packaging and can’t easily be mistaken for a reconditioned one. Most often residential style breakers or MCCBs is where counterfeiting occurs.


Myth #2 – Reconditioned electrical equipment is not as safe as new

Reconditioned electrical equipment is just as safe as new models as we have already outlined in a previous post. It may even be safer! This is because OEMs only batch test their products, reconditioning requires 100% device testing. The fact that the testing standards are so high are a testament to this fact. Civic Recycling is so sure about safety standards that we offer a 1-year warranty on all our products. Pretty great right? Visit our testing page for more on our process. Typically the general standards are as follows:

  • Conduct initial test
  • Disassemble, inspect, and clean
  • Replace/recondition worn and aging components
  • Reassemble
  • Perform verification test
  • Document
  • Certify

Myth #3 – Reconditioned equipment is less reliable, lower quality than new

As the PEARL article states:

“If a piece of electrical equipment was reliable and high quality when it was new, then older electrical equipment reconditioned to perform as good as or better than the original must also be considered reliable and high quality. Quality isn’t a question of new versus reconditioned, but rather, can you trust the source of the equipment? If you’re familiar with an OEM brand, you probably trust them.”

And on top of that, all PEARL certified companies such as Civic Recycling hold themselves to high standards in testing and quality.


Myth #4 – Reconditioned electrical equipment costs less, but more to operate

This argument is valid for certain types of equipment such as new TP-1 transformers and circuit breakers with solid-state trip technology or zone alarms. But most electrical equipment is passive and is not required to consume electricity to do its job. So the argument is not valid for most of the 21 types of standard electrical equipment covered by PEARL.

In addition, new and reconditioned equipment will be field-tested regardless. Onward to safety!


Myth #5 – Reconditioned electrical equipment increases liability

Let’s start by saying that each piece of reconditioned equipment is tested twice. Once before reconditioning and once after. Say one out of 100 breakers were tested coming off an assembly line…which would you trust more? Both are pretty solid bets but liability is not an issue for reconditioned equipment.


Myth #6 – Only OEMs can properly recondition electrical equipment

OEMs say that a company needs to understand the exact electrical engineering behind an electrical device and should only purchase reconditioned products from OEMs. However, there are some differences between private OEM reconditioning versus public PEARL reconditioning standards

  1. PEARL uses independent, third-party electrical engineers to review its standards (OEMs do not).
  2. PEARL makes its standards available to the public for review and comment. Open and transparent! OEMs don’t do this.

Myth #7 – Reconditioned electrical equipment invalidates the (UL) mark

Underwriter Laboratories (UL) official position is that independent testing and certification companies takes no position on the validity of UL marks after the equipment leaves the factory.

Electrical Safety: The Top 5 Points you Need to Know

Electrical safety is critical both at home and at work. Here, we look at 5 top considerations to enhance your safety.

Electrical Safety: Use sockets with tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles

The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that all buildings constructed or renovated after 2008 have tamper-resistant (TR) receptacles. TR receptacles are special devices with spring-loaded shutters that close off the contact openings of the receptacles. Because both springs need to be compressed before the shutters can open, electrocutions resulting from accidental insertion of a conducting material into one contact opening can be minimized.

Ensure that your home has ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)

When there is a break in the grounding path of a low-resistance current, the current can take an alternative path to the ground through the user. This is called a ground fault. Ground faults are common and have resulted in severe injuries and even deaths in the past. Ground Fault Current Interrupters (GFCIs) are lightning-quick circuit breakers used to cut off such faults.

Protect your electrical outlets with Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)

Replacement receptacles should be arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) protected. An AFCI is an electrical safety device that helps to prevent fires.  It resembles a GFCI in the sense that both devices have test buttons and a reset button. The main difference, however, is that GFCIs are designed to protect people from getting electrocuted whereas AFCIs are meant to prevent fires.

Be extra careful with transformers

Transformers must be carefully tested before installation and continuously monitored thereafter. Make sure that there is no continuity (electrical leakage) between the primary and secondary coil. Also, ensure that there is no leakage between the power cord and any metal external parts such as the rivets. Most transformers are equipped with circuit breakers for additional safety.

Use only tested devices that meet industry quality standards

The design and manufacture of electrical devices is guided by certain industry standards. The Canadian Electrical Code or CE code develops and maintains these standards. Our neighbours to the South follow the National Electric Code and the National Fire Protection Association. Electrical components that fail to meet these standards might expose you to unnecessary danger. Civic Recycling certifications meet and often exceed the standards set out by PEARL (Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League), NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and NETA (InterNational Electrical Testing Association).

CANADIAN ELECTRICAL CODE CHANGES YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Standards Council of Canada or SCC has accredited changes for approved electrical equipment in Canada. The changes have taken effect this year (2015) and the changes affect the electrical industry nationally, regionally and internationally. Electric standardization helps boost Canada’s competitiveness and safeguard the health and safety of its citizens.

RECONDITIONED CIRCUIT BREAKERS: ARE THEY SAFE?

Sometimes a governmental safety alert is publicized and it gets people talking and rumors spreading regarding the safety of a certain product or sometimes even the practices of an entire industry. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), a division of the United States Department of Labor, released such an alert in the fall of 2011. Entitled Incorrectly Refurbished Circuit Breakers, the alert describes how a third-party electronic equipment rebuilder modified certain Eaton/Cutler-Hammer molded-case circuit breakers while incorrectly refurbishing them. Some of the safety issues cited regarding these third-party 600-volt and 1000-volt suspect breakers include:

  • Circuit breakers have been altered from the original manufacturer’s design
  • Exterior labels on cases were reproduced by the rebuilder in an attempt to make them look new and authentic
  • Frames for both 600-volt and 1000-volt units contain parts of unknown origin and specs
  • 1000-volt covers may have been assembled onto units rated at only 600-volts
  • Breakers show no indication of having been approved by a nationally recognized testing organization

Conclusion: These knock-off, counterfeit, bogus breakers are a safety risk and should not be used, due to their inherent danger. OSHA recommended pulling them out of service as soon as possible.

Reconditioned Circuit Breaker – Safe to Use?

Because of instances like this, some have questioned the safety of buying and utilizing a reconditioned circuit breaker.
